SHC L2 v Cambs South 4s
4-2
Charlotte Maplethorpe (2)
Kelly Cooper (1)
Sophie Wilson (1)
With the early frost melted and the sun shining, Spalding Ladies’ 2s looked to maintain their position at the top of Division 3NW against Cambridge South.
Those who arrived late to watch would have missed the lightning start as Charlotte Maplethorpe added to her season’s tally with a penalty corner rebound finish after little more than a minute followed by a second in the seventh minute. At 2-0, instead of kicking on for more, Spalding became sloppy in possession and gave South a route back into the game with a penalty corner that was deftly deflected past the outstanding Freya Lee in goal. On the stroke of half time, Spalding failed to pick up the movement of the South forward and she finished well to equalise.
A determined message was given by captain Zoë Moore at the break to get back to the game that Spalding know they can play. Midfielders Karen Timby and Roz Dennis started to pull the strings and a chance was created 5 minutes into the half when Honor Moore moved the ball past defenders for Kelly Cooper to slot home. With the game still in the balance, the home team were grateful for Lee’s player of the match performance between the posts and could begin to breathe more easily when Maplethorpe turned provider for Sophie Wilson to tap home. With a two-goal buffer the home team hung on for another 3 points and a step closer to ending the season on top.
