Spalding Ladies 3 4 Haverhill 1 3
On a wet Saturday morning, with their full squad almost back to full numbers, Spalding were hopeful of a win. They began well and made some fantastic moves forwards putting pressure on the Haverhill defence. The opposition worked hard to try and confuse the home side and made some great linking play. Spalding kept attacking and with some great balls through from the back to midfielders Vicky Worrall and Jenny Bradley who were quick to pass out wide to Eloise Doherty and Terry Robinson or upfront to the goal hungry Lucy McClements who even attempted a cheeky lob that hit the cross bar. Eventually, Spalding were awarded a short corner and captain Charlotte Morris struck it well and Camille Rogers jabbed at it to ensure it went securely into the bottom corner. However, Haverhill determined not to lose hope snuck one back one minute later.
At half time, the formation changed and Morris asked the team to dig deep and Sharon Amess, Sam Foston and Holly Gleave certainly did that. They fought for everything and ensured that the ball was moved beautifully through beating the opposition and hitting it into the D. After winning several short corners, Grace Hodgett stepped up and struck one slickly to take the lead. Again to the disbelief of Spalding Haverhill scored again one minute later. It didn’t take long for Haverhill to use the momentum to their advantage to score again.
Spalding, although concerned, continued to battle and show some brilliant play – simple pass and move, fabulous dribbling and moves forward and excellent team work especially from Honor Pearson and Khloe Brewster (player of the match) which resulted in two goals from the always impressive Chloe P. The crowd helped motivate the home side and work hard till the end of the game. Right at the end another short corner was won but even though it was a great routine, it just missed and ended the game 4-3. A super result but a game that showed the spirit of this ladies team. They are now excited for next week and looking to build upon the many positives!
