Match Report – Spalding Ladies 2s vs Cambridge University 4s
Spalding Ladies 2s travelled to face Cambridge University 4s and put on a determined and spirited performance from the first whistle. Right from the start, Spalding made their presence known, with brilliant forward runs down the wing from Emily and Kelly, causing early pressure and making Cambridge’s defence work hard.
Despite Spalding’s strong start, Cambridge managed to find a way through and took the lead 1–0 at 12 minutes. Unfazed, Spalding responded with renewed energy. The press was set superbly by Grace, Vicki, and Camille, forcing mistakes and disrupting Cambridge’s attempts to play out from the back.
A quick shuffle of positions midway through the first half gave Spalding fresh momentum. Grace played a key role in driving the ball up the pitch, opening up attacking opportunities and pushing Spalding further into Cambridge’s half. However, despite their hard work and improved structure, Spalding went into half time still trailing 1–0.
The second half began with Spalding continuing to show grit, but Cambridge capitalised on a few scrappy moments, managing to score a flurry of messy goals around the 55-minute mark, taking the score to 4-0. Shortly after, Cambridge were awarded a penalty flick. Eliza produced a superb effort in goal, reading the shot brilliantly, only for the ball to cruelly rebound into the net leaving the score at 5-0.
Rather than letting their heads drop, Spalding came back fighting once more. Excellent movement and link-up play from Sam, Steph, and Amy helped reignite the team’s attacking spark. At the back, Poppy and Holly stood strong, making vital clearances that turned defence into attack. Their efforts paid off, leading to two well-deserved goals from Chloe P, who finished clinically to give Spalding a powerful late surge.
The final score may not have reflected the passion, effort, and resilience shown, but Spalding Ladies 2s demonstrated true team spirit from start to finish. With performances like this, it won’t be long before the results start going their way.
