On a fresh Saturday afternoon Spalding Ladies 3s played against Ely City 3s. It was a very competitive match with both teams putting in both defensive and attacking efforts. But within minutes Ely caught Spalding still snoozing from the car journey and opened the scoring with a cheeky tap in. But Spalding did not lower their heads, in fact this woke them up and relentlessly carried on with their attacking efforts. Sally Pilgrim made a recovery appearance in defence and brought luck to the team. As in the 14th minute, Kelly Tizzano used her experience by playing advantage and listening to the lack of a whistle smashed a goal past the Ely keeper. Spalding then took domination of the game and then midfield kept the ball much in the attacking half with amazing passes from Lucy Wilson and Jess Worth out to wingers Jess Pilgrim and Eloise Doughty who did their lighting runs down the wings. Ely were left stumped when a beautiful ball from Isla Worrall found Eloise Hull in the D, who majestically scored a great goal by dribbling past defenders and into the D then slapping the ball into the bottom corner. Half time 2-1 up.
After a encouraging team talk from the managers and captains Spalding then carried on their attacking efforts by creating many opportunities to get the ball into the D but could not finish the opportunities. Ely did not stop trying to bring the score back however any break through the midfield was beautifully defended by Terri Robinson as CB. Lily Hooker as LB stopped any Ely player dead, running the ball up the wing around all the Ely players to smash it into the D to create so many opportunities, this superb play secured her MOM. She was on fire, no one could stop her!
The game see a debut from Megan Wright who played amazingly and really found her stride as LB stopping Ely attackers and passing the ball back to midfield.
Ely did create an opportunity to equalise the score by getting into the defensive D had some shots on goal where Anya Knights goal keeping skills saved a few shots but Ely managed to get awarded a short corner. Doing what they had practiced at training, Spalding 3s were all lined up to defend. Jess Pilgrim ran 1 at lighting speed, faster than the ball, and her stick made a solid contact with the ball on the Ely stick to knock it out of their play! That’s was an amazing demonstration of a defensive short and putting practice into play. Spalding took this opportunity to take back possession.
Many shots on goal were taken by Sam Foston, Kelly Tizzano, Lucy Wilson, Eloise Doughty, Eloise Hull, Jess Pilgrim, Jess Worth, but the Ely defenders and goal keeper managed to keep the score at a full time 2-1 win for Spalding. Who remain top of the table.
