On a cloudy afternoon, Spalding Ladies 2s took to the pitch to face Cambridge South 3s, who currently sit second in the league table. It was a fast-paced and competitive match, with both sides demonstrating determination and skill throughout.
The game began with a strong offensive push from Spalding, as Kate Amess, Camille Rogers and Grace Hodgett drove forward, applying pressure to the Cambridge defence. At the back, Sam Maltby, Leanne Isaac-Pick, Poppy Hooker and Holly Gleave worked hard to maintain possession and distribute the ball effectively up the field.
Despite Spalding’s strong start, Cambridge managed to break through, playing the ball down the baseline. A brilliant initial save from Eliza Morris in goal wasn’t enough, and the rebound was slotted in, putting Spalding 1-0 down. Spalding maintained their intensity, didn’t let their heads drop and continued to battle.
3 minutes into the second half Vicky Worrall and Grace Hodgett linked up beautifully to level the score at 1-1 Poppy Hooker, Kate Amess, Eloise Hull and Emily Wright combined well on the left wing, sending the ball forward to Steph Wilson and Grace Hodgett. Several short corners were won, and Elise Hatton remained consistently well-positioned on the right, supporting smooth transfers from Leanne Isaac-Pick and Steph Wilson. Despite these efforts, Spalding couldn’t find the back of the net again.
As the clock ticked down, Cambridge turned up the pressure, earning a series of short corners. Eventually, a strike from the opposition unfortunately deflected off Holly’s foot and found its way into the goal – a tough break that put Spalding 2-1 behind. As a result, Holly was (good-naturedly!) awarded DOD.
Nonetheless, Spalding showed great spirit and continued to push until the final whistle. It was a performance full of heart, teamwork, and promising play.
Camille earned a well-deserved Player of the Match for her outstanding performance, and the team also celebrated Grace’s 23rd birthday, ending the day with high spirits and optimism for the matches ahead.
