Spalding Men’s 2s welcomed Long Sutton 2s to Glen Park for a fiercely contested local derby that went right down to the wire.
Long Sutton struck first with an early goal, punishing Spalding before they had settled. But the hosts hit back instantly from the push-back. A slick passing move ended with Harry Vickers firing a thunderous strike from inside the D, levelling the game at 1-1.
The rest of the match was a tight, end-to-end battle. Lawrence and Reuben gave Spalding width on the wings, carrying the ball forward with pace. Tom was a key playmaker, moving the ball quickly and accurately to carve out opportunities. At the back, George, Simon, and Willem held firm against Sutton’s pressure, supported by tireless shifts in midfield and attack from Arron, Pete, Danny, Tim, and Oli.
In goal, Rob was outstanding. He produced a string of spectacular saves that included one with his head to keep Spalding in the game and frustrated the visitors.
As the clock ticked down, it looked as though Spalding’s determination would secure a well-earned draw. But with just two minutes left, Long Sutton won a short corner. Rob saved brilliantly from the initial strike, but the rebound fell kindly to the attackers, who managed to slot home a cruel last-minute winner.
The match ended 2-1 to Long Sutton. Despite the late heartbreak, Spalding can be proud of a strong team performance, full of determination, hard work, and moments of real quality.
Man of the Match: Reuben — for his tireless running and great work down the wing.
Donut of the Day: Oli — for turning up late to the team talk after shopping for a Halloween costume.
