On a blustery afternoon in Glinton, Spalding Men’s 1s dug deep to claim a deserved 4-3 win over Bourne Deeping M1s in what proved to be a gritty, hard-fought local derby.
Despite the wind making conditions challenging, Spalding started the stronger of the two sides. The opening goal came through Jacob Baker, who drove forward with intent before finishing confidently to put Spalding ahead.
Bourne Deeping levelled shortly after via a penalty corner, but Spalding responded with composure. Will Baker tucked away a composed finish into the bottom left corner, sending Spalding into the break with a 2-1 lead.
After half-time, Bourne Deeping found an equaliser again from a penalty corner rebound, but Spalding raised their level. Harry Walsh restored the lead with a neat finish to make it 3-2, and it wasn’t long before Jacob Baker added his second — a clever deflection from a penalty corner — giving Spalding breathing room at 4-2.
However, Bourne Deeping hit back immediately, making it 4-3 straight from the restart to set up a tense finish. With just moments remaining, Bourne Deeping won a final penalty corner, but Spalding’s defence held strong to secure all three points.
The match was scrappy at times, influenced by the strong winds and inconsistent officiating that saw Spalding denied a couple of clear chances. Despite the frustrations, Spalding maintained their focus and showed superior control and attacking quality throughout.
Harry Maplethorpe was deservedly named Man of the Match after a complete all-round performance, contributing in all areas of the pitch. Meanwhile, Will Baker picked up the DOD honours for an off-field incident that drew some laughs — though his first-half goal certainly softened the blow.
All in all, a strong team performance in tough conditions — and another important win for Spalding to build on.
