Report: 4th XI Men vs St Neots 3 – March 15, 2025
Spalding Men’s 4s Battle Hard but Fall 2-0 to League Leaders St Neots 3s
Spalding Men’s 4s put in a determined performance at Glen Park against top-of-the-league St Neots 3s but ultimately fell to a narrow 2-0 defeat in a match that remained competitive until the final whistle. Missing several key players due to injury, Spalding showed great resilience and teamwork to push their strong opponents all the way.
The game started with high intensity as Spalding defended well against St Neots’ early pressure. Lorenzo Mendoza took up his familiar defensive position on the wing, showing great strength and composure to keep the visitors at bay. James Giles and Kev Sawyer also provided solid defensive support, making key clearances and denying St Neots any easy chances. Steve Thurlbourne made several crucial saves to keep the game level, denying St Neots on multiple occasions.
Despite the absences, Spalding worked hard in midfield, with Andy Barlow battling for control and looking to move the ball forward. Cheston Palmer was a standout performer on the wing, combining excellent tackling with driving attacking runs, constantly putting the St Neots defense under pressure. Fred Neal, Sam Hicks, and Alex Myland all had great games, contributing both in defense and attack, and working tirelessly for the team. Great ball control by Jake Sawyer was another highlight, as he displayed skill and composure in tight situations, maintaining possession and helping to transition the ball forward effectively.
Spalding held out well, but just before halftime, St Neots found a breakthrough, capitalizing on a rare lapse in defense to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half saw Spalding push for an equalizer, with Jack Dorsett and Dylan Hind pressing high up the pitch. However, with Spalding committing more men forward, St Neots took advantage on the counterattack, scoring a second late on to secure the victory.
Despite the result, Spalding’s performance was full of heart and determination. Lorenzo Mendoza’s defensive strength and Cheston Palmer’s tireless work on the wing earned them joint Man of the Match honors, highlighting their crucial contributions.
The match also showed the impressive progress made by the younger players in the team. Their skills have really improved, particularly in passing the ball and working together as a team. It was clear that the youngsters are gaining valuable experience by playing against more experienced adult teams, which will continue to benefit them in future matches.
With several key players missing, this was a spirited display from Spalding, who will take plenty of positives as they look to bounce back in their next fixture.
