Spalding traveled to sunny and warm Peterborough for their last away game of the season. With a positive pep talk from the team managers and newly appointed captain Zoe Moore, the ladies were eager to gain a point today.
Peterborough took the lead early in the first half, from a short corner and fumble, whereby the ball slipped past keeper Char Burt. With the pressure mounting, our team showed great character and determination to respond. Char made some cracking saves throughout the game as well as great defensive skills from Sam Maltby and Pippa Bembridge.
In the second half, we produced a piece of attacking brilliance that showcased the team’s excellent communication and tactical awareness. A short corner was awarded and quickly taken by Amy Naylor, who used the short pass to slip it to Grace Hodgett. Without hesitation, Grace unleashed a powerful strike toward goal. The ball appeared to be heading off the sideline, but just before it reached her, Erin McMurray managed to get a slight deflection, wrong-footing the keeper and sending the ball into the back of the goal.
The goal was a testament to the team’s quick thinking and fluidity of passes, with a well-executed set-piece that caught the opposition off guard. While the deflection made the goal slightly fortunate, the buildup was a thing of beauty and demonstrated the strength of the team’s offensive play.
In the final stages of the game, both sides pushed for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough, and the match ended with a 1-1 scoreline.
