Spalding M2’s went to Ely with the aim of returning with a win and continuing with the promise shown in the previous two games against a strong midfield pack team in Ely. The match started with both teams holding the ball when the opportunity allowed. Ely then applied pressure and they were rewarded with a succession of penalty corners. Spalding’s defense held strong, until Ely scrambled a rebound in. Spalding struggled to keep possession of the ball afterwards, with too much dribbling and direct play. The continuous loss of possession allowed Ely to attack with several chances going wide and saves to me made. Eventually Ely scored their second goal from a well-constructed move down the right side, across the back line and slipped into the goal, 2-0. Spalding counter attacked from the restart and after some reasonable possession scored, only for it to be disallowed having been judged to have hit a foot.

Half time came and stern words were spoken to the team in the hope of inspiring a fight back. Spalding definitely increased their intensity but struggled to retain possession allowed Ely to regain the ball and apply pressure. Spalding defended with skill and determination which prevented Ely from scoring any further goals. Tempers rose on both sides in the final quarter and with the umpires losing control, the game became a little disjointed. Final score 2-0 to Ely with Spalding looking to reflect and learn from the experience.
