On and cloudy grey drizzly day at Glenn Park, Spalding Ladies 3’s faced Cambridge Uni 3’s for a 3.30pm push back. Cambs Uni won the toss and attacked hard from the first whistle. 4 goals scored in and first 10 minutes confirmed that Cambs Uni meant business! Spalding soon settled and got into their stride and held Uni back from gaining any further goals in the first half. Solid marking, tracking back plus shear grit & determination appeared to be the winning combination.
Spalding weren’t without their own chances, with some excellent advances played down the wing by Emily & Vicky and long balls through to Erin, Zoe and Lauren up front, to break through Cambs Uni’s very high defensive formation. Our central core Amy, Tabby and Camille remained strong throughout, feeding the balls through and linking play. However, unfortunately there would be no goals for Spalding today.
Exceptional defensive skills demonstrated by Holly, Honor, Sam and Grace both in field play and short corners, with Erin and Camille fast out the blocks running 1 & 2 to disrupt Cambs Uni’s well drilled routines. The defensive lineup remained united right to the end despite injuries along the way. True commitment and solidarity until the final whistle.
Cambs Uni continued with their quick attacks throughout the second half, utilizing the switch round the back to counter attack as well as players coninually swapping positions to keep Spalding on their toes, resulting in 5 more goals to add to the scoreline.
Final score 9-0 loss to Saplding (although GMS reports a 9-0 win!). Spalding had some beautiful standout moments throughout and always leave the pitch smiling and ready to take on the next challenge- which for us will be a re-arranged game with Cambs Nomads 11am on 15th Feb at home.
MOM- Char for her awesome saves and keeping the goals in the single digits.
DOD- Grace for getting in the way of Honor’s goaline clearance resulting in the ball deflecting onto Grace’s thigh……still kept playing though….what a trooper! 😉
