With the last home game of 2024 Spalding Men’s 2’s welcomed Cambridge Nomads 2s on a wet and blustery day with an important 3 points at stake for both teams. For Spalding to look to step up the table ready for the break and for Nomads to get their first win and put pressure on the teams above them.
The first half of the match was mostly summed up by a fairly equal match up with Spalding the slightly more in control team with the chances and possession that they held through the half. Mostly only wavering when caught on the counter and for 2 minutes when down to 10 players entering the half-time break at 0-0 looking to build on more pressure and get the win.
Heading into the 2nd half both teams created chances with the possibility of goals for both teams, but strong defenses kept the ties level as the game ticked on with Spalding slowly building more strength in the game and pushing more chances to score finally being able to break the deadlock through a Tim Maltby finish. The goal bolstered Spalding’s confidence in both attacks and defence and after repelling the Nomad teams attacks Spalding snatched a second goal with 3 minutes remaining to give the breathing room to finish the game off as winners and into 8th in the league.
