Match report
Spalding 4-4 Cambridge City
Spalding battled brilliantly to snatch a deserved point off league leaders City. It was an unfortunate start with an early short being struck well and finding the bottom corner for city. It was 2-0 in around 10 minutes to a scrappy goal from a short which was dribbled in and was a pretty lucky goal for a team top of the league. Never the less Spalding battled hard and Peter Wright scored with a precise short corner finish . It was then an unfortunate green for Lawrence Smith-hughes which lead to Spalding attempting to defend the rest of the half only to concede to another short a few minutes before the break. It was 4-1 to a fluke finish agonisingly rolling in of the post. Then Spalding produced the best hockey they have all season. Reuben Rogers scored a composed yet lovely finish rounding both the keeper and defender at once to slot the ball into the open goal. Then it was Spaldings turn to scrap the ball over the line with Ethan Worall scoring in an open goal after around 10 shots hitting the keepers pads before hand. Then it was 4-4 to a lovely deflection worthy of winning a point off the league leaders as Ben Scholes scored off a beauty of a ball from Simon Goode who produced a defensive masterclass. Good defending saw the last ten minutes out and Spalding almost won it with Reuben Rogers almost scoring again.
Wright had the ball in the net for an unlikely winner from another short but the shot was just over the back board. Overall a brilliant performance and result with the midfield being the stand out problem to Cambridge as Danny Wright and Tim Amess managed to keep the defence protected for large parts of the game. A great effort from all FT 4-4. The team will take lots of confidence going to March next Week
