With the effects of late Autumn setting in, Spalding 2s welcomed Cambridge City 4’s as the last home game of the day. With numbers short on both sides it proved to be both a game of stamina and game management.
Throughout the first half Spalding kept good possession of the ball and tested the Cambridge defence while quickly becoming aware of the threat of Cambridge on the counterattack, with 3 or 4 players that combined skill, pace and confidence on the ball to cause a problem for Spalding eventually breaking through and snatching two goals on the break. Not to be disheartened Spalding pushed on and grabbed a goal back leading into the latter end of the first half through a strong finish from Matt Pottle putting the game at 2-1 to Cambridge at the half.
Knowing they had to try and get goals to keep the game alive Spalding looked to step that bit higher up the pitch when they built up a play which left the counter attack on again which was unable to be dealt with putting Cambridge 3-1 up before another goal gave them some breathing room. Ignoring the score Spalding continued to work hard and built good chances nearly scoring twice, but with those finishes not going their way the game ended 4-1 to Cambridge.
Credit to the team for their effort put in, but ended a game of what could have been. Man of the Match: Matt Pottle for his excellent finish and midfield workrate. Dod: Willem Borst for a skewed aerial to help set up a Cambridge attack.
