Having already won the League, Spalding Ladies faced Wisbech for the cup final. Spalding changed the scoreline within the first few minutes after a goal from AJ Bunyan. Wisbech followed shortly after with a goal from a well worked short corner. In the second half, Wisbech struggled to find any further shots on goal thanks to the defensive skills of Ysabel Ward, Michelle Smith, Madeline Oldfield, Samantha Maltby, Kathy Martindale and Frances Dalton who out ran her much younger opposition on several occasions. Spalding went from strength to strength and Kelly Varley lifted the ball into the goal taking them 2:1 up. Midfield continued to push hard despite the strong winds and blazing sun. Alison Wild, Hannah Albans, Katie Gray and Varley along with Roza Kalman and Holly Hetherington worked really well together to maneuver the ball around the pitch towards towards Bunyan and Alex Allwright. Both Bunyan and Allwright used their formidable ability to work the ball around the D and both were rewarded with a goal each in the second half taking the final score to 4:1. This really was a perfect ending to a season plagued with multiple changes and injury. Camaraderie has been a key ingredient to their success and for this we thank all players and coaches of Spalding Ladies 3’s.
