Spalding ladies played their last away game of the season in Huntingdon. From the whistle this was to be a very tense game both to watch and to play. With everything on the line and the possibility of being relegated Spalding prepared by having a full squad of fresh legs ready for the battle of the season.
Spalding worked well as a team but needed to score goals and with plenty of missed opportunities it started to frustrate both sides with no scores on the board at half time.
Steady work form Roz Dennis and Meg Moore in the centre and Spalding defence rock solid anytime Huntingdon tried to breakthrough. Spalding came back with a fresh attack and began to take advantage of the opportunities on goal with a beautiful reverse hit from Grace Hodgett giving Spalding a 1-0 lead and raising the ante of the game five minutes into the second half.
Spalding knew this wasn’t enough and kept pushing Huntingdon further into their own defence forcing a short corner. The Huntingdon keeper went to ground and Eva Keyes managed to turn on her reverse and slot in the second and final goal of the game. With minutes to go all Spalding had to do now was to hold firm in defence. That final whistle couldn’t come quick enough and Spalding jumped with sheer joy knowing they were finally safe in Div 3NW.
