Spalding mixed welcomed Lincoln Roses to a snow/frost free Glen Park in the England Hockey Mixed Trophy. The game started in a cagy manner, with both sides seeing what the other had to offer. Spalding struck first with a fine finish by ladies 1st team captain Kelly Tuplin after 9 minutes but Roses equalised from a well struck penalty corner a few minutes later. Spalding rotated their large squad constantly which resulted in Eva being up front and she finished with a rocket shot from the top of the dee. Cunnington was dominant in central midfield and found a rampaging Ash Barker advancing just outside the 23. Ash took the ball in his stride and finished well into the corner of the goal to give Spalding a 3-1 half time lead. Following a positive half time team talk, Spalding came out determined and this time Cunnington found Russ 'fastest player in the East' Watts, who made no mistake. Mens top scorer Cunnington made it 5 with a fine reverse stick finish after 41 minutes. Spalding were now playing some fast, free flowing hockey and having long periods of dominance which Roses found hard to deal with. Cunnington made it 6 with a trademark drag flick from a penalty corner and completed his hat-trick with yet another fine reverse stick finish.
A fine all round team performance, where it was noteable how well the men and ladies combined. All players showed great workrate, determination and desire to give Spalding a deserved 7-1 victory against a strong Roses team.
Well played all :)
